The Ford and Hyundai illustrate the breadth of possibilities on offer to sedan buyers, with the i40 delivering heaps of space, great highway comfort, diesel availability and unbeatable ownership credentials.

The Focus isn't quite as strong in these key areas but you wouldn't say it's not good enough and it's a much more satisfying package on the driving and emotional fronts.

On balance, that would have us swaying towards the Ford but we'd probably settle for a hatch so we could have the diesel.

The CX-5? It also expertly blends practical and emotional talents but costs more than the Focus and lacks the peace of mind of capped-price servicing. If you really need a compact SUV it's a worthy choice but the Ford's brilliance means it's certainly not essential.
